Home Care Tips to Help You Survive the Aftermath of Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom Teeth: Friends or Foes?Abbotsford Wisdom Teeth Extraction Dentist - Home Care Tips

It seems like having a large set of molars would be beneficial for chewing tough foods. During the late teen years and early twenties, wisdom teeth attempt to erupt naturally. The problem is that this third set of molars does not always have room to erupt successfully. As a result, they may become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, crowding, and disease. Extraction is often the best option to prevent more serious issues in the future.

What can Abbotsford residents expect after wisdom teeth extraction?

Swelling, tenderness, and bruising commonly occur on the face and neck following wisdom teeth extraction. Your Abbotsford dentists will send you home with special care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. Follow Clayburn Dental’s advice to minimize the risk of bleeding. The last thing anyone wants is for complications to delay the healing process.

How do I handle the swelling?

To help reduce swelling, bruising, and discomfort, apply ice packs to cheeks in 20-minute intervals. Talk to your dentist to determine if an infection was present before extraction. If so, your dentist may recommend warm, moist compresses instead of ice.

Wait about 12 hours before rinsing with either salt water or diluted mouthwash. Steer clear of the surgical site when gently brushing your teeth the same night as the surgery. Do not smoke or drink from straws. The sucking motion could dislodge the clot at the extraction site.

Will the bleeding stop on its own?

Most dentists recommend clamping down gently on gauze for about 30 minutes immediately following surgery until the clot begins to form and the bleeding stops. A moistened tea bag can be used in place of gauze. The tannic acid helps the blood clot set by constricting the bleeding vessels in the socket. If bleeding is heavy, you can apply pressure directly to the gauze with your fingers for about 30 minutes.

Pay Attention to Your Sleep Position

A pile of pillows or foam wedge allows you to sleep at close to a 45-degree angle. When you lie flat, blood flow more freely to the face. This can cause unpleasant throbbing.

Why does massage of the jaw joint help alleviate pain?

During wisdom tooth extraction, the jaw is open wide throughout the procedure. Myofascial pain and sore masseter muscles are common. To help alleviate pain, you can massage your jaw joint by placing your fingers right in front of the ear opening and applying light pressure as you massage in a circular motion.

Should I follow a special diet after wisdom tooth extraction?

Allowing the blood to clot sufficiently, and leaving the clot undisturbed is the best way to prevent dry socket. Avoid carbonated beverages and using straws to help keep the blood clot in place during the early stages of healing. Stick with a soft diet to prevent food particles from getting stuck in the socket. If the clot is dislodged or dissolves, bone and nerve endings may be exposed.
