Dentures in Abbotsford

At Clayburn Dental in Abbotsford, we provide denture restoration treatment. A denture is a removable dental restoration for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. Dentures are made to resemble your natural teeth as closely as possible and to help improve the function and aesthetic look of your smile.

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. There are two types of dentures available, complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Dentures can improve your ability to chew and speak, and can help improve the aesthetics of your smile.

Complete Dentures

A complete denture may be either “conventional” or “immediate.” A conventional denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, usually taking 4 to 6 weeks. During this time the patient will go without teeth.

Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made to the dentures for fit.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture rests on a metal framework that attaches to your natural teeth. Sometimes crowns are placed on some of your natural teeth and serve as anchors for the denture. Partial dentures offer a removable alternative to bridges.

Dentures are very durable appliances and can last a long time with good care. However, they may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear and tear.

How do dentures work?

With full dentures, a flesh-colored acrylic base fits over your gums. The base of the upper denture covers the palate (the roof of your mouth), while that of the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue.

Dentures are custom-made in a dental laboratory from impressions taken of your mouth.

The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments will take place to ensure proper shape, colour, and fit. At the final appointment, your dentist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, for a natural and comfortable fit.

It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, discomfort, and difficulty chewing and speaking. These symptoms will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.

At the end of your treatment, you will be given care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance and good oral hygiene will aid in the life of your new dentures.
