During the holidays, it can be all too easy to over-indulge on treats. Here are some tips from our Abbotsford dentists on how to keep your smile healthy and bright during Christmas!
Tip 1: Watch your wine consumption.
You are probably well aware that red wine can stain and discolour your teeth, leaving them looking dingy. But in addition, both red and white wine contain acids and sugars that can damage your tooth enamel over time.
For these reasons, it might be a good idea to be aware of your wine consumption over the holidays, when there are simply more opportunities than usual to partake.
Tip 2: Take advantage of the fruit tray.
Almost every holiday party includes a fruit tray in among all the baked goods and candy. Make a point of filling up on fruit before you approach the sugary desserts, and you’ll be less likely to overdo it with food that can damage your teeth.
Tip 3: Brush your teeth to the tune of a Christmas song.
You probably know that you should brush your teeth for at least two full minutes, twice a day. A festive way to make sure you brush for a full two minutes to play your favourite Christmas song, and brush for its full duration.
Tip 4: Take this opportunity to improve your oral hygiene routine.
Most people could probably do more to take care of their dental health, and the holiday season, with all its treats and candy, is a great time to make some improvements in this area.
You could add mouthwash to your routine, set a timer to make sure you really are brushing for a full two minutes, invest in an electric toothbrush, or add a third brushing session to your day (perhaps after lunch).
Tip 5: Schedule a professional cleaning in the new year.
After all the indulgence of the holidays, it can be a good idea to visit your dentist for a professional cleaning in January, to get you off to a good start in 2019.
